As more people return to work in person, it’s time to figure out a household budget again. Cornerstone Community Financial Credit Union President Heidi Kassab told Michigan News Network budgeting for non-negotiable costs is a good way to start:

“Gas for your car, your daycare costs, things like that,” Kassab said. “So factoring those into your budget first, and then seeing what’s left over. I think the old rule still says you pay yourself first, which means saving is more difficult when expenses go up, but you want to save first before you spend.”

Kassab says budgeting for the necessary first will allow you to treat yourself for the unnecessary. That would include things like the morning latte or lunch out.
