The Michigan Department of Transportation will resume tourist information services at all Michigan Welcome Centers this week. The state has 14 welcome centers located at entry points to the state, including New Buffalo. The centers were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but under the governor’s latest gathering and mask order, MDOT moved to resume their tourism activities ahead of Memorial Day weekend. Michigan Transportation Director Paul Ajegba says the centers “play a key role in highlighting all Michigan has to offer both to in-state and out-of-state travelers.” He says they offer information on destinations and events to visitors. Demand for travel and tourism information is expected to be high over the long Memorial Day weekend as AAA forecasts more than 1 million Michigan residents take a trip, up 57% from last year. The state also offers quick COVID-19 testing at the welcome centers in Dundee, Coldwater, New Buffalo, and Monroe.
