Some public comments by Reinaldo Tripplett during Monday’s Benton Harbor City Commission meeting got the attention of Mayor Marcus Muhammed. Tripplett said the cemetery was overgrown and filled with litter, making his family feel they had simply thrown his mother away. Muhammad said that has to stop.

“We can’t have parties at the cemetery. There’s a way to respect the dead. These are areas that are coming from the community and we had police and hold one another accountable, says Muhammad.

He said people also need to take responsibility to clean up after themselves.

“A nine-member board and a four-member public works department cannot cover 4.4 square miles and get everything done when everybody wants it to get done. It’s impossible.”

Muhammad called on people to help out.
