The United Way of Southwest Michigan has announced its 2021 Volunteer United Youth Scholarship winners. Spokesperson Jennifer Tomshack tells WSJM News the organization gives out three $1,000 scholarships each year to high school seniors who have served the community.

“We really recognize the remarkable young people in our community who are stepping up and volunteering at a very young age, and it’s remarkable to me that at the age of 14 or 15, some kids start to get interested in serving their community and it becomes a priority for them that stays with them for the rest of their life,” Tomshack said.

There is one scholarship for Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren county each. The winners are Sarah Jannings of Lake Michigan Catholic High School, Drew Bidwell of Edwardsburg High School, and Hahna Gorenz of Michigan Lutheran High School. Tomshack says it’s always difficult to choose the recipients from among those who applied.
