Lake Michigan College will hold a commencement ceremony on Saturday, and it’ll be a bit different from your usual ceremony. LMC President Trevor Kubatzke tells WSJM News it’s a Drive In, Drive Through commencement at the Mendel Center in Benton Township.

“Our graduates will come in their cars with their loved ones and park outdoor movie theater style,” Kubatzke said. “We’ll have a stage set up for the ceremony, and it’ll be broadcast over FM radio. We’ll have what would be a traditional commencement ceremony, except the students aren’t sitting in the mainstage, they’re sitting in their cars.”

After the ceremony with pre-recorded speakers, the cars will be guided through the Mendel Center circular drive, where the grads will be handed their diploma covers and then they can go take pictures out front. Both the 2020 and 2021 grads are invited since there was only a virtual celebration for 2020. Kubatzke says there will be around 200 graduates in all. Due to capacity rules, they could not have held commencement in the theater. This weekend’s commencement will be streamed over LMC’s YouTube channel.
