Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced a new initiative to detect and stop elder abuse. She says the new Sentinel Project is focused on protecting vulnerable adults residing in nursing facilities.

“The project will involve specially trained staff using a variety of performance metrics, complaints and other data to target facilities for unannounced visits by a Sentinel field team,” Nessel said.

The field team will do site investigations to look for evidence of abuse. If criminal or civil action is warranted, Nessel’s office will do so. While The Sentinel Project is a law enforcement effort strictly within the attorney general’s office, the project will work with the industry and regulatory partners. Nessel says you can report abuse or neglect in a nursing facility through the Michigan Attorney General’s Health Care Fraud Hotline at 1-800-24-ABUSE or through an online complaint form.
