Governor Gretchen Whitmer has taken her “fix the damn roads” message straight to the people who do fix the roads. She joined the Oakland County Road Commission and Operating Engineers Local 324 on Friday to fill potholes in Lake Orion. Whitmer shoveled black patching material into potholes and chatted with the crews that usually do that work.

“We can patch and patch and patch, or we can rebuild,” Whitmer said.

Whitmer last year announced the Rebuilding Michigan plan, a $3.5 billion bond plan to rebuild state highways and bridges. That work will be going on for several years. While working with the crew in Oakland County, she asked the crew about the strangest things they have found along roads. One remarked he recently found an empty cooler. She said she’d like to find a cooler full of Oberon.
