The Benton Harbor Public Library is being named in honor of Berrien County Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough. During a Monday Benton Harbor City Commission meeting, Yarbrough’s service on the library board was praised as Commissioner Ron Singleton noted her role in the community.

“It definitely is well deserved,” Singleton said. “The commitment that Mrs. Yarbrough has shown over the years for not only just the library, but for this community in general. She served on school boards, different committees. So it’s just an honor.”

Mayor Marcus Muhammad called Yarbrough a trailblazer. She was given time to speak.

“I love the city of Benton Harbor, Michigan,” Yarbrough said. “I have lived here, and a little bit in the township, but the majority of my life has been in Benton Harbor. And I’m proud, and especially proud in the last couple of years of the progress I see.”

Yarbrough represents the city of Benton Harbor on the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. She said she’s proud of the library for the services it provides to residents. The vote to name the library for her was unanimous.
