Next year, Laura Goos and Lynn Todman will be the senior members of the St. Joseph City Commission with Commissioner Jeff Richards announcing Monday night he won’t run again, and Mayor Mike Garey also saying that today. Garey has been on the commission for 22 years and has been mayor for the past eight years.

“We have, now, six grandkids in different areas, and it’s time to sit back and enjoy life,” Garey tells WSJM. “I’ve been doing this for a while with work and everything else. It’s time for retirement and the city’s in great hands.”

The city is losing 60 years of experience with Garey and Richards leaving. The mayor says he wanted to get word out to help people considering running to do so.

“I really encourage folks to give it a try and run for commission. It is a great city, it is very well maintained and run by the staff, who are key folks.”

Garey says he’ll miss staff at City Hall, the Memorial Day Parade, and being involved in the Blossomtime Festival.
