The city of St. Joseph is supporting the application from the city Parks and Grounds Department for a state Land and Water Conservation Fund grant for Whirlpool Centennial Park. Deputy director Greg Grothous says they expect to start working in a few years.

“If we are awarded this grant, which certainly is not guaranteed, we believe the work will likely take place in the 2022-2023 fiscal year, although we do plan to budget for it in the 2021-2022 budget year in case things move more quickly at the state level,” said Grothous.

He says a $100,000 donation has also come in anonymously. The project would add a restroom and pump house building, shade structures, another sidewalk, and two shower and foot bath combinations on the north and south side of the fountain. The city commission’s vote was unanimous. Grothous expects the result of the grant to be known in late November or early December.
