Students at Fair Plain East Elementary in Benton Harbor were paid a visit by Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist on Monday. He was there with the MDOT plow “Tiger,” which was named by students at the school as part of MDOT’s “Name MI Snowplow” program. Students in Roxane Gilbert’s fifth grade class chose the name after considering several possibilities. Student La’Var Crayton was glad to see the plow.

“We were the only class ion the school, in the district, like in all the schools in Benton Harbor, Michigan that ever did this,” Crayton said. “So it was pretty cool seeing our name on there with the Tiger and the truck and everything.”

Gilchrist said it was good to see the kids excited and being exposed to the types of careers and professionals that make the state run.

“It is awesome,” Gilchrist said. “The kids are super excited about it. I had them teach me some things about how the snowplow works, and I just think the exposure the department is giving the children about the types of careers and the people and the professionals that take care of them, take care of the community, that kind of connection and relationship, it’s really beautiful.”

Gilchrist thanked MDOT for keeping roads open in severe weather with machinery like Tiger the plow. Teacher Roxane Gilbert said the kids considered several names, including “Frosty,” before settling on Tiger.
