A Springfield, Illinois man is in the Berrien County Jail following a high-speed chase that took police from Chikaming Township to I-196 in Van Buren County on Friday. The Chikaming Township Police Department says it all started when police got an advisory to be on the lookout for a vehicle stolen out of Illinois around 3:15 p.m. A Chikaming Township police officer spotted it eastbound on I-94 near the 11.4-mile marker. The officer tried to stop the vehicle, but it sped off with police following. The driver managed to avoid some stop sticks near the 30 mile marker and continued off I-94 on to I-196. The Covert Township Police Department deployed some stop sticks, and when the fleeing driver swerved to avoid them, he lost control and the vehicle he was driving got stuck in snow in the highway median. The 26-year-old driver and his 25-year-old female passenger, also from Springfield, were taken into custody. The woman was later released.
