In frigid weather like we’re having this week, everyone is reminded to take steps to ensure their own safety. Michigan State Police spokesperson Dale George tells WSJM News it’s important to be bundled up in layers if you’re outside. And know the signs of cold injury like frostbite or hypothermia.

“Signs of frostbite include a loss of feeling or color around the face, your fingers or toes, numbness, white or grayish yellow skin that can look firm, or waxy skin,” George said. “Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, memory loss, slurred speech, or drowsiness.”

George notes a lot of people will be shoveling snow, which is taxing on the body and can lead to heart attacks. If you’ve lost power and are using a generator, keep it away from windows and doors to prevent carbon monoxide from getting into your home. Also, if it’s too cold out for you, then it’s too cold out for your pets, and remember to check on neighbors. You can find recommendations for staying safe in the cold at Michigan.gov/MIReady.
