Governor Gretchen Whitmer has allocated $300 million to repair and replace 129 local bridges in her latest budget proposal. Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association Vice President of Government Relations Lance Binoniem tells Michigan News Network he supports Whitmer’s efforts and is calling on lawmakers to address the issue of road funding more broadly.

“We haven’t seen a comprehensive, long-term solution laid out and agreed to by both parties,” Binoniem said. “Roads don’t have an R or a D on them so we think this is a perfect opportunity for lawmakers on the right and on the left to come together and solve one of the state’s biggest problems that we have.”

MDOT announced it will be using $3.5 billion worth of bonds over the next five years, with 49 roads and bridges expected to see construction.
