Governor Whitmer has provided an update on COVID vaccinations in the state. She says access to more vaccines will be coming online in the weeks ahead, but the state will not be able to buy directly from Portage-based Pfizer.

“Because of their early use authorization, they are precluded from selling directly to the state,” says Whitmer. “Our request at the end of last year was based on the fact that we had no assurances coming from the federal government, we didn’t see that it was being ramped up, the federal government had bought or even paid for the vaccines. That’s all very different now with this new administration and so the need to buy directly is not what it was back in December.”

She says the federal government is now giving Michigan insight and transparency and now pre-purchasing vaccines.
