The “Let Them Play Michigan” coalition held a news conference Tuesday morning to announce a lawsuit against the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services that aims to push the state to allow winter contact sports to begin immediately. Attorney Peter Ruddell represents the plaintiffs and says the safety of high school sports has been proven.

“The data and science support the resumption of youth sports,” Ruddell said. “We have seen that through a pilot study that the MHSAA conducted with the state health department where they tested over 5,000 athletes and coaches which resulted in over 35,000 tests being conducted on those individuals, with a 99.8% negativity rate.”

Ruddell says the order postponing winter sports until February 21 violates the U.S. and Michigan Constitution, pertaining to civil rights, equal protection, due process, and the right to free assembly.
