The Michigan Department of Treasury is looking to help college bound high school students understand the financial aid system with a series of virtual meetings next month. Chad Somerville from the MI Student Aid team tells us they normally hold in-person sessions at high schools, but COVID has sent them to Zoom. He says students looking to apply for financial aid can’t be blamed for often finding the system difficult to navigate.

“The financial aid process is very confusion at times and it can be daunting at times as well, and there are a lot of layers that go within figuring out this whole process,” Somerville said. “That’s why we step in and help.”

Michigan Department of Treasury specialists will leads the virtual sessions, going over topics that include FAFSA application information, federal and state aid programs, and how to search for scholarships. Someville says those who attend the Zoom sessions can ask questions via the chat app. There will be virtual financial aid nights each Tuesday and Thursday throughout February from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The registration page is right here.
