A Michigan State Police trooper was injured when his patrol car was struck by another vehicle in Battle on Sunday night. Michigan State Police have released the following:
Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers are investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a MSP patrol vehicle and a black Toyota Camry that occurred on Jan. 17th at approximately 10:00 p.m. on West Columbia Avenue near Stevens Road in Battle Creek, Calhoun County.
Preliminary investigations reveal that trooper Christopher Haywood was traveling westbound on West Columbia Avenue when the Toyota Camry crossed the centerline and struck the patrol vehicle head on.
Trooper Haywood and the two occupants of the Camry suffered severe, but non-life-threatening injuries. All three parties were transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for medical care.
The driver of the Camry, later identified as a 32-year-old male from Kalamazoo, is suspected of operating while impaired by a controlled substance. His identity is being withheld pending further investigation.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department, Battle Creek Police Department, Life Care Ambulance, and EMS Battle Creek Fire Department.
