The annual Bears in the Air campaign of the South Bend International Airport is underway this week. 1,400 Teddy bears have been purchased thanks to donations, and they will be dropped off at five hospitals in the region, including Spectrum Health Lakeland. South Bend International Airport Director Mike Daigle tells WSJM News the Bears in the Air program has provided more than 12,500 bears to kids in hospitals in the last nine years.

“The generosity by corporations and individuals in our region is what really allows this to occur, and their financial donations to the Bears in the Air program helps us to do that and go out and find these very large purchases of bears,” Daigle said.

The deliveries for this year started Monday. The campaign will also make a cash donation to the Robert L. Miller, Sr. Veteran’s Center in South Bend in January.
