Governor Gretchen Whitmer is reiterating her call for the federal government to provide aid to states that are financially strapped due to the pandemic. Speaking Friday, she said the state government being broke will trickle down to cities and schools.

“In Michigan, 56% of state funds go back to local governments and school districts, so it may be difficult to hold them harmless if we don’t get some help from Washington,” Whitmer said.

Whitmer said the COVID relief package being worked on in Washington can’t be the last.

“This is relief. This is about getting by. This is about businesses that can’t meet their rent payment. This is about individuals who are unemployed and looking at $600, and I’m sure they’re grateful for $600, but that is nowhere near the kid of relief we’re going to need if people are going to get through the next couple of months.”

Whitmer said it is foolish for Congress not to include aid to states and municipalities in the latest package. Whether to provide aid to states was one of the last sticking points as members of Congress tried to hammer out a deal at the last minute.
