Families in Dowagiac are getting a little help from the Army National Guard as guardsmen this week launched a food drive at the Family Fare Supermarket. Sergeant First Class Jason Brautigam says they chose to do it because of the need.

“”Obviously, it’s a shame knowing we have youth out there, kids out there who aren’t getting enough to eat. So being right here in this small community of Dowagiac, I’ve given food out of pocket before to assist some kids,” says Brautigam.

He made his comments to our partners at WSBT-22. Staff Sergeant Kelce Poirier says they donated everything collected Tuesday to the food pantry at Liberty Chapel.

“The church has a better idea of specific families that are in need. So by going through this church and going through their food pantry, we know that the food is going directly go to those in need.”

They add they will be doing more charity drives over the next several months.
