The closing of high schools to in-person learning isn’t sitting well with a Michigan Senator. Republican Kim LaSata from Berrien County told state Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon that local districts and parents should be able decide what’s best for their communities.

“Let the parents decide,” said LaSata. “Let the school systems decide whether they’re open or whether they’re closed. Let those who know the students best, their communities best, to work with their health departments to make that decision.”

High schools and colleges were closed to in-person learning two weeks ago. Gordon said there is more risk for high schoolers to spread the virus than younger students. He also said while students may not get as sick from the virus, they could infect their parents or grandparents.
