There’s a new post commander at the helm of the Michigan State Police post in Niles. With the departure of First Lieutenant Mike Dawson, Lieutenant Ryan Schoonveld has now been promoted. As post commander, Schoonveld will be responsible for the operation of the Niles Post and the Hagar Detachment, and will manage the delivery of Michigan State Police services to the people of Berrien and Cass counties. He’s originally from Holland and now lives in St. Joseph. In his 21 year career with the MSP, Schoonveld has served at the Monroe Post, the former Bridgman Post, the Niles Post and the Paw Paw Post. He’s held the ranks of trooper, detective trooper, sergeant, and lieutenant. Schoonveld says these have been challenging times for police and community, and he looks forward to engaging with everyone, adding he is “ready to listen, to lead by example, and continue providing the excellent service you have come to expect out of the MSP Niles Post.” He started in the new role on Sunday.
