A snowfall record that’s been in place for four decades has been broken in Marquette. The National Weather Service says 8.3 inches of snow fell Sunday, breaking the old record of 3.1 inches set in 1976.

“October is one of those transition months where like I said it’s not unprecedented to get snow,” says National Weather Service Gaylord meteorologist Jeff Lutz. “So every once in awhile, the records for that time period are still on the low side, so it’s not all that hard to get a lot of snow to have during one particular storm.”

Lutz says snow in October is no indication of how much snow we’ll get this winter.
