The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is warning of what it calls an alarming increase in new COVID-19 cases around the state. For Saturday, the state reported more than 3,300 cases, and for Sunday and Monday combined, it had more than 3,800 additional cases. Department spokesperson Lynn Sutfin tells WSJM News there’s one trend contributing greatly to the increases.
“Most often, we are starting to see them in social gathers,” Sutfin said. “That is one of the big issues, that individuals are getting together, perhaps not social distancing because there were family or friends, not wearing a mask, and we are definitely seeing those outbreaks increase.”
Sutfin says it remains important to wear a mask and distance.
“We definitely understand this has been a very difficult year. People are very social creatures. We want to be with family and friends, we want to check up on loved ones. However, right now the best thing we can do is keep our distance.”
And if you are going to visit someone, at least wear a mask and distance. In total, Michigan has had nearly 162,000 cases of the illness and 7,211 deaths. The state website on Monday said Berrien County has had a total of 2,444 cases and 79 deaths. It shows Cass County with 898 cases with 24 deaths, while Van Buren County is listed as having had 986 cases and 16 deaths.
