Spectrum Health has made an anti-racism pledge as part of its ongoing effort to eliminate structural racism and promote social equity. The organization announced this month it’s also made Martin Luther King Junior Day a paid holiday for staff. Spectrum Health says it’s focused its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts on five areas. They are increasing the organization’s cultural competency, supplier diversity, community engagement, equity of care, and workforce diversity. In addition, it says its anti-racism pledge commits the organization to conducting reviews of internal procedures, increasing team member knowledge, ensuring priorities are evaluated for their impact on health equity, and developing strategies to ensure health equity among patients. Spectrum Health says it has signed on with the American Hospital Association’s 123 for Equity Pledge.
