The Michigan Supreme Court ruling against Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s use of emergency power comes as the group Unlock Michigan has been working to repeal the 1945 law used for those orders. Group spokesman Fred Wszolek says the governor should reconsider her method of addressing the pandemic response.

“We think that the governor should take a look at the spirit of this ruling as well,” said Wszolek. “This court is saying that no politician can be given unlimited power for an unlimited duration to rule by decree. She should consider her next moves very carefully because the 80,000 activists who got really good at collecting initiative signatures could just as easily collect recall signatures.”

Wszolek says Unlock Michigan will continue to move forward with the proposal to repeal the state emergency powers law, considering that the court ruled by a slim 4-3 majority, and a future court could reverse the decision.
