The Berrien County Health Department is urging residents to continue taking steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. That’s after a Michigan Supreme Court ruling Friday that struck down many of the orders issued by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Berrien County Health Department spokesperson Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News local leaders are in wait and see mode.

“Right now, we are in consultation with our legal counsel, with our board of health, with our board of commissioners, as well as our colleagues across the state of Michigan including the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, to determine the next steps for Berrien County,” Conrad said.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued its own mask and capacity orders on Monday. Meanwhile, Conrad says people should continue taking those precautionary steps to avoid COVID.

“We know that the actions our residents have been taking for the past seven months have definitely impacted, in a good way, the outcomes that we have seen here in Berrien County.”

Conrad says Berrien County has been relatively stable for the past few months, and health officials credit the mitigation steps everyone has been taking. She expects more information to be coming later this week.
