Amazon is proposing a new sorting and delivery facility in west Michigan. The 113,000 square foot facility would be built in the area of 4 Mile Road and Hendershot Avenue, just north of I-96, in the city of Walker. Mayor Gary Carey told Michigan News Network Friday  it will be a big economic boost to the city.

“We have the lowest property taxes within the county of Kent of the cities around here, so we rely very heavily on that city income tax,” Carey said. “So those jobs do mean a lot to our city, whether it ends up being between 400 and 500 or if it’s between 300 and 400 when it gets up and running.”

The Walker Planning Commission plans to hold a hearing on the proposal on Wednesday, October 7.
