The November election is going to keep staff at the Berrien County Clerk’s Office busy. In fact, it’s already keeping them busy. Berrien County Clerk Sharon Tyler told the Berrien County Board of Commissioners Thursday there have been delays in printing ballots and other complications, some of which have spilled over from the August primary. She’s hoping the primary’s date in the future will be moved to June. Tyler said she expects results this November 3 not to be known until 10 a.m. the next day.

“It doesn’t mean it’s the fault of the local clerk or the county clerk or anybody else, I would rather have people be more detailed and precise in what they’re doing,” Tyler said.

Tyler said her staff is focused on keeping the election accurate and secure. She’s also anticipating potential further complications.

“I’ve been working with Administrator [Brian] Dissette in case we have a presidential recount like we did before. Due to all of the changes in the courts with the pandemic and jury issues, a lot of the buildings have been occupied or have already been reserved.”

Tyler said she’s working with Lake Michigan College to secure a proper location for potential recount work if that becomes necessary. She told the board it’s “been a long and bumpy road,” and “I’m saying a lot of prayers.”
