Benton Harbor City Commissioners have taken another step toward the establishment of a municipal trash collection service. During a Tuesday meeting, the body approved the purchase of two trash trucks. The cost is $239,000. City Commissioner Ron Singleton, who has led the effort to bring garbage collection in house, said they should arrive in town soon.

“We’re looking at the week of the 21st, I believe…or the 24th would have them here delivered,” Singleton said.

The city commission decided this summer to move away from contracted trash collection and bring the service in house. Singleton has estimated doing so could save the city thousands of dollars per month. The goal was to have the city-run service up and running in October, and City Manager Ellis Mitchell said Tuesday it’s on track.
