Celebration Cinema is ready to reopen, and waiting for permission from the governor. Celebration Cinema spokesperson Emily Loeks spoke at a press conference on Thursday, saying the theater chain has been losing close to $1 million per month during the forced shutdown. She said “our options have become limited,” noting the chain had to put 95% of its employees on furlough. While the governor is finally allowing gyms to reopen next week, there’s been no word on theaters and a handful of other businesses. When Loeks spoke Thursday, she was joined by the head of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce and Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss. They called for the remaining shuttered businesses to at least be given a chance to survive with a limited reopening. Loeks said the chain can reopen with plans to limit audiences to 25 or 50%. She noted the buildings have high ceilings and strong HVAS systems with fresh air intake. With reserve seating, she said they can ensure people are distanced. Celebration Cinema operates 13 theaters in Michigan, including the theater in Benton Harbor.
