A Dowagiac man could be facing charges after authorities removed 79 animals from his home on Thursday. The Dowagiac Police Department says it executed a search warrant at the home in the 100 block of Lester Street after receiving complaints about possible animal abuse and hoarding. Officers investigated and determined that the resident there had the animals in violation of city ordinances and Michigan law. The animals removed from the home included 48 rabbits, ten dogs, eight cats, five quails, four Guinea pigs, two love birds, one turtle, and one chicken. All of the animals were taken to animal control. The animals appeared to be in good condition and appeared to have been fed. Officers also spoke at the scene with the 37-year-old homeowner. The case will be submitted to the Cass County Prosecutor for a review and determination of any charges.
