With Labor Day weekend about here, the Michigan Department of Transportation is preparing to lift traffic restrictions in construction zones so travel can be easier. MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News it should be smooth sailing, or driving, in most places.

“We are suspending or removing lane restrictions on 144 out of 200 projects statewide,” Schirripa said. “There still will be some lane closures around, but we’re getting out of the way as much as possible for the weekend.”

Schirripa says Berrien County does have a few areas where they can’t lift lane restrictions. That would include westbound I-94 near New Buffalo, the I-94 Business Loop at Crystal Avenue in Benton Harbor, and US-12 at US-131. AAA predicts Labor Day travel will be down about 15% from last year, but 97% of all travel this weekend will be by automobile.
