Congressman Fred Upton is still holding out hope leadership in Washington will return to the negotiating table for a new coronavirus relief package. The talks broke down this month over disagreements regarding unemployment benefits, sending Republicans and Democrats running home with no plan. Upton tells WSJM News they need to get it together and come up with something.

“Maybe it’s a slimmer package, whatever it has to be,” Upton said. “I know that we could and we should be able to reach an agreement. There’s a real need out there. As much as we would all have liked to have this done by Easter, it didn’t happen. So we need to continue to step up to the plate, find the resources, work with our local officials, and ensure that our citizens are safe.”

Upton says he’s convinced an agreement can be reached, telling us schools need support as they seek to reopen safely. He notes members of Congress will be back in Washington this weekend to talk about the Postal Service, adding there’s no reason they couldn’t stick around longer to work on COVID. However, he thinks it’s more likely work will resume in September.
