It will be a long day, or couple of days, for staff at the Berrien County Clerk’s office this Tuesday. With primary elections taking place, Berrien County Clerk Sharon Tyler tells WSJM News there will be a whole lot of absentee ballots to count thanks to the pandemic.

“We’re so prepared due to the pandemic that we are looking and weighing the effects,” Tyler said. “People just have to be patient on election day with the results.”

Tyler says results probably won’t be available until around 4 a.m. or later on Wednesday. She notes the elections staff has to work until everything is done.

“When there’s a federal election, our local clerks have to come in with the election information. They can’t keep it in their office so they have to report back to us. Until they’re done, we have our reporting that we have to get into the state of Michigan.”

Tyler says there are precinct delegates to be elected this week, which will further slow down the results thanks to write-ins. She reminds those who dare to vote in person that they can only vote for one political party. If you try to vote in more than one party’s primary, you will spoil your ballot. Also remember not to wear any campaign buttons or shirts, wear a mask, and social distance.
