Construction has begun on Indiana Michigan Power’s new solar facility near South Bend. I&M spokesperson Schnee Garrett tells WSJM News the St. Joseph Solar Farm will feature 57,000 solar panels on 210 acres of property next to the Indiana Toll Road between Bittersweet and Cleveland roads. It will be I&M’s fifth solar farm.

“Our current four solar facilities generate nearly 15 megawatts of electricity, and this one solar facility under construction will generate 20 megawatts,” Garrett said.

Garrett notes I&M is working with nearby Notre Dame on the facility.

“The University of Notre Dame will support 40% of the renewable attribute of the solar facility. I&M and Notre Dame will work together to ensure educational opportunities and research benefits of the project.”

I&M’s other solar farms are in Marion, Mishawaka, and New Carlisle, Indiana, and in Watervliet here in Michigan. The new facility should be finished and up and running next spring. Garrett says if you drive by the area, you won’t be able to miss it.
