St. Joseph City Commissioners have agreed to a plan that would install a revetment to protect Lake Michigan shoreline along First Street. The only remaining section of Lake Michigan shoreline between Park Street and Lions Park Beach without continuous shore protections installed or planned is the area beginning at the north end of First Street and running south about 198 feet. Property owners in the area last month asked for city help in fixing that. As the city has negotiated with them since, attorney Laurie Schmidt read the proposal for commissioners during a Monday meeting.

“Each of the three property owners would pay $38,940 for 33 feet of the revetment, and there would be no restrictions on the public property,” Schmidt said. “They have agreed to that, and the city would then pay for 66 feet of the right of way for First Street, along with an additional 33 feet to the south.”

The city’s share of the work would be $121,000. Commissioners approved the revetment plan with an unanimous vote during Monday’s meeting.
