Governor Whitmer has ordered all health workers in Michigan to receive implicit bias training. The governor’s order is aimed at addressing the coronavirus pandemic’s disproportionate impact on people of color. Michigan Chief Medical Executive Joneigh Khaldun says such training can make a positive difference in making sure everyone has equal access to health care.

“Implicit bias training is a simple but impactful way that we as healthcare providers in Michigan can strive toward being a state where regardless of where someone seeks medical care – a dentist’s office, a pediatrician’s office, an optometrist, or an emergency department – clinician are aware of the biases they have and they have to tools to address them.”

Black residents represent 14% of Michigan’s population, but account for 40% of COVID-19-related deaths.
