The Michigan Senate has approved a package of legislation from state Representative Pauline Wendzel that will allow breweries in the state to self-distribute more of their products. Wendzel tells WSJM News current state law limits small breweries from self-distributing more than 1,000 barrels each year. If they go above that, they have to hire a distributor. Wendzel’s legislation doubles the limit to 2,000 barrels.

“We’ve got 22 breweries in Berrien County, and we know they’re hurting a little bit right now,” Wendzel said. “This is just a way to help them out.”

Testifying in the Senate about the bills was Jay Fettig of North Pier Brewing, who said they “will help simplify and streamline many areas of Michigan’s Liquor Control Code and allow Michigan’s craft breweries to focus on what they do best: Make great beer.” The legislative package now goes to Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
