The property tax due date is fast approaching. Berrien County Treasurer Shelly Weich tells WSJM News due to COVID-19, Governor Gretchen Whitmer moved it back to June 29. If you still owe on your taxes, the treasurer’s office will work out a payment plan with you.

“All we need is to have the property owner contact my office, and we can set up an agreement that works with their budget and financial needs. It’s a monthly agreement that they pay and it keeps them out of foreclosure.”

Weich says more than 800 property owners are in payment plans.

“Those that have faced the loss of a job or health issues or some other matter due to the COVID-19 virus, we’re willing to work with them. If they can at least show that they still have interest in the property and want to remain active on the payment plan, we’re recommending a minimum of $25.”

That’s per month. Weich says property taxes from 2017 that are not paid by June 29 will result in foreclosure unless the owner gets into a payment plan. Although the Berrien County Administration Center remains closed, staff are working at the treasurer’s office. Weich says anyone who needs help can just call.
