Some long-awaited rate relief is in store for Michigan drivers, as the state’s new no-fault auto insurance law is set to take effect next month. Among the changes — no longer will drivers be required to carry unlimited lifetime medical coverage, or personal injury protection. Anita Fox is the director of Michigan’s Department of Insurance and Financial Services. She spoke with Michigan News Network about the reforms.

“Every side can probably point to things that they would like,” Fox said. “More protections, or they wanted more reductions for other things, whatever it is that other people could point to, but it was a great step because we know that people couldn’t afford the coverage, and this is a way to maintain our no-fault system, but make it more affordable.”

The bottom line Fox says is there will be cost savings available, which is what led to the reforms. However, Michigan drivers will need to choose their coverage options more carefully, starting July 1.
