Protests led to rioting and looting in multiple Michigan cities this weekend. 100 businesses were damaged and seven police cars set on fire in Grand Rapids. Windows were broken out of the Grand Rapids Art Museum. City officials spent Sunday assessing the damage, and Mayor Rosalynn Bliss set a curfew for Sunday and Monday nights.

“A night time curfew is necessary in order to prevent additional violence and to maintain order,” Bliss said. “I urge every single of of you in this community to adhere to the curfew and to come together and help make sure that everyone is safe.”

Bliss also called in the National Guard. A curfew was put in place Sunday night after windows were smashed in several buildings downtown. They included the George W. Romney building, which houses the governor’s offices. Lansing Police Chief Darryl Green says officers were assaulted with bottles, rocks, and liquids. Police used tear gas to break up the crowd.
