An 8-year-old boy is recovering from minor injuries after he was rescued from the Dowagiac River by police on Saturday. The Cass County Sheriff’s Department says deputies responded to a rescue call near Arthur Dodd Memorial Park shortly before 4:30 p.m. They found the boy about 20 feet from the shore hanging on to a submerged tree in fast-moving water. Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters entered the water and pulled the boy out. He had been kayaking with his mother when high water levels and fast currents caused his kayak to overturn. The boy was wearing a proper life jacket. He was taken by ambulance to Lakeland Niles Hospital for minor injuries. Assisting at the scene were Pokagon Tribal Police, Michigan State Police, the Pokagon Fire Department, Sister Lakes Water Rescue Team, Indian Lake Water Rescue Team, SMCAS Ambulance, and True’s Towing & Recovery Service.
