Spectrum Health Lakeland is asking everyone to take a moment to honor front line healthcare workers next week. Spokesperson Jessica Springer tells WSJM News that’s as they mark Nurses Week and Healthcare Week.

“We’re asking community members to create a luminary, write the names of the healthcare workers they’d like to honor on the bag, light a candle, and then place it on their porch or driveway on the evening of May 12,” Springer said.

May 12 is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Springer says Spectrum Health Lakeland has 1,143 nurses in its system, and they have been working hard to protect and care for the public during the pandemic.

“It’s obviously a difficult time for everyone, but I think that those in healthcare are courageous and have compassion to serve others, and I think it’s just an honor to care for our friends and neighbors in our community.”

If you put a luminary outside of your home next Tuesday, you’re asked to send a picture of it to Lakeland or to post it on social media while tagging Spectrum Health Lakeland. Springer says they’ll do the same at their hospitals.
