Governor Gretchen Whitmer did not like what she saw during the most recent protests of her COVID-19 executive orders on Thursday.

“Yesterday’s scene at the Capitol was disturbing, to be quite honest,” said Whitmer. “Swastikas and Confederate flags, nooses and automatic rifles do not represent who we are as Michiganders.”

During her Friday briefing, she thanked the millions of Michiganders who stayed home and did not take part in the loud demonstrations, images and video from which have gone viral worldwide.

“I want to thank all of our dedicated Michigan State Police officers and the House and Senate Sergeants who kept people safe,” she added. Whitmer also thanked those who spent their Friday “cleaning and disinfecting the Capitol.”

Whitmer says she understands the frustration with not being able to go to work and have life immediately return to normal. She adds, though, that as much as she’d like to flip a switch and turn things back to how they were, that cannot happen without a risk of a sharp rise in COVID-19 infections and deaths.
