Governor Whitmer has some words most of Michigan has been eager to hear.

“The data we’ve seen in the past week has lead me to believe that it’s time to re-evaluate the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order,” Whitmer said Wednesday afternoon. She is adamant, however, that relaxing the restrictions will be done in a careful and measured way.

“As hard as this is right now, a second wave would be devastating. So, when I say I’m hoping to loosen some restrictions, I mean that I’ll only loosen them based on what the facts and data are telling us when it is safe, and how it is safe, to do so,” said Whitmer.

The governor says the details on how things will start to be relaxed will be coming in her update on Friday. The current version of the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order is set to expire at the end of the month, and Whitmer is saying it will be extended with modifications.

“Michiganders will still need to stay home unless they’re doing things that are explicitly permitted by this order,” said Whitmer. “We’ve got to get this right. That’s the most important thing.

“We know there will be a need for an extension of some sort,” the governor continued. “We know that even when we get to a stable moment, that people who are compromised, who are vulnerable to COVID-19 are still going to need to stay home. So, some version will be in effect for a while.”

The governor says she will be joined by business leaders from around the state along with the UAW and other labor unions when the announcement is made on Friday. Whitmer said while COVID-19 cases are slowing down and have likely peaked in metro Detroit, they’re heating up in other parts of the state.
