13 new testing sites for COVID-19 are opening this week around Michigan, and one will be in Benton Harbor. The site at InterCare on M-139 is a drive-thru testing center, meaning the patient will not have to get out of their car. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson Bob Wheaton tells WSJM News there are now new standards for who can be tested.

“In the past, you had to meet criteria that made you particularly vulnerable, like if you were hospitalized or if you were 65 or older or if you were a healthcare worker with symptoms,” Wheaton said. “That has changed. The testing criteria has changed. So, if you’re symptomatic, basically if you have the symptoms of COVID-19, you meet the criteria to be tested.”

Wheaton says the 13 new testing sites being opened around the state are expected to increase Michigan’s daily COVID-19 testing capacity by about 40%. He recommends calling the Benton Harbor location before showing up there.
