The National Federation of Independent Business is applauding an announcement by Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey that a taskforce is being formed to look at safely reopening some businesses around the state. NFIB Michigan Director Charlie Owens tells WSJM News the state will face a severe recession if something doesn’t change.

“We’ve done a nationwide study that shows 92% of small business members have been affected by this,” Owens said. “In small businesses, it’s cash flow, and there aren’t too many businesses that can survive a month, or in some cases two weeks, of no revenue.”

Owens says reopening some businesses can be done in a safe manner. For example…

“If you have people who are in home construction, if they can keep a work crew with masks and gloves and other things, there are things that they can do on the job site safely.”

Senate Majority Leader Shirkey says letting some businesses reopen would not mean the social distancing and non-essential travel rules go away. Owens says while the NFIB supports the orders thus far issued by the governor, “it is time to look at a more balanced approach.”
