Visitors are not allowed at Michigan prisons starting Friday. The policy was put in place Friday morning in a response to the spread of the coronavirus. Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz says it will impact a variety of programs.

“We’re going to be cancelling college classes and things like that, where prisoners are taking courses, and so there are going to be other things because they are facilitated by outside volunteers who also will be affected by this no visitors policy,” Gautz said. “We’re doing everything we can to find opportunities and things for the prisoners to do with their time so we can keep them busy and keep our staff and keep the prisoners themselves safe.”

Gautz says it’s not clear how long the no-visitors policy will remain in place. Officials will continue to monitor the status of the coronavirus outbreak.
